ROOTED
ROOTED in Solidarity is an intergenerational learning and practice space for white people across diverse sexualities and gender identities to examine their relationship to race and power, deepen connection within and across communities, and take meaningful action for racial justice.
This is not just a place to learn. It is a place to practice.
Why It Matters Now
At a time when both LGBTQ+ communities and racial justice efforts are under increasing pressure and often pitted against one another, it becomes even more critical to:
Tell fuller, more honest histories
Build deeper, more resilient relationships
Support people in taking meaningful, sustained action
ROOTED is designed to meet this moment.
-
We are ROOTED in Solidarity (solidarity is our soil where we grow), it's more than a name. It reflects the work:
Race — examining our whiteness and its role in perpetuating systemic racism
Orientation — honoring diverse sexual orientations and gender identities while reorienting ourselves to what becomes possible when we tell a truer history
Ourselves — deep self-reflection through somatic practice, small group and 1:1 conversations, journaling, and engaging with external content to deepen understanding and awareness.
Truth — uncovering fuller histories and holding ourselves accountable to those truths
Empathy — building connection and care across lines of difference (across race, class, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability)
Doing — taking intentional thoughtful action in solidarity
-
ROOTED is designed for:
White people across diverse sexual orientations and gender identities
Individuals seeking a space that reflects the complexity of their lived experience
People who want to move beyond awareness and into meaningful action
This is especially for those who:
Who are longing for a space to learn where they don’t feel expected to have all the answers
have felt between or outside existing spaces
are asking deeper questions about identity and responsibility
-
To expand the ecosystem developed by WMRJ and Tapestry to support white folks of diverse gender identities in racial justice work, build understanding for how gender and sexuality have been policed and weaponized by white supremacy, and build accountability for white LGBTQ+ people in racial justice work.
Community of belonging for white LGBTQ+ people committed to racial justice
Framework of understanding the ways gender and sexuality have been the underpinnings of white supremacy
Brave spaces for how whiteness disrupts our work towards queer liberation
-
ROOTED is a cohort-based experience grounded in four core practices:
1. Unearthing History
We explore how the fuller story of 2SLGBTQ+ history has been minimized, erased or villainized while centering the frameworks of race, power, and resistance.
2. Examining Whiteness
Participants engage in honest reflection about how race shapes identity, community, and lived experience.
3. Building Relational Accountability
We create space to build authentic relationships across differences, grounded in trust, care, and accountability. While we are all committed to racial justice, we recognize that we do not all come to the table fully formed, wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome here.
4. Practicing Solidarity in Action
Participants leave with tools, commitments, and pathways to take action in their communities, workplaces, and networks. After completing the ROOTED foundations, participants are invited to join an ongoing ROOTED community or encouraged to explore the offerings of WMRJ and Tapestry as they feel it appropriate.
-
ROOTED is designed as a practice space, not a perfection space.
We believe:
Growth happens in relationship
Discomfort is part of learning
Accountability is an act of care
Action is the measure of impact
Participants are not expected to have the right answers. They are expected to show up with honesty and a willingness to grow.
-
ROOTED was born from sibling projects of White Men For Racial Justice and Tapestry.
We can’t change what we don’t understand. And we can’t build something better alone. ROOTED is an invitation to understand more fully, connect more deeply, and act more courageously together.
ROOTED will launch its first cohort in Fall 2026.
